Hardware, network and infrastructure operatives are found in organisations large and small, in all sectors, and within public, private and voluntary organisations.
Foundation apprenticeships introduce skills for a range of jobs in a sector, and provide general skills for work. After a foundation, apprentices can specialise and do a standard level 2 or 3 apprenticeship.
Employers get an incentive payment for foundation apprenticeships, as well as government funding for training and assessment costs.

Who can do a foundation apprenticeship
At the start of the apprenticeship, they must be:- aged between 16 to 21 (or 15 if their 16th birthday is between the last Friday of June and 31 August)
- aged between 22 to 24 and
- have an education, health and care plan (EHC)
- be in care or a care leaver
- be a prisoner or a prison leaver

Technical knowledge
- Health, safety and security including organisational policies and procedures.*
- Digital systems, infrastructure, networks, software packages and programmes.
- Roles and responsibilities of stakeholders.
- Own role and responsibilities and how they help to achieve the needs of the organisation.
- Documentation and systems.*
- Essential cyber security compliance including phishing and scams.
- Function and operation of the stages within the solutions life cycle.
- User requirements, needs and priorities.
- Essential solution architecture and testing.*
- Emerging technologies, for example automation or AI in the sector and or occupation.
- The components of digital infrastructure and the relationship between devices.
- Technical fault diagnosis. Identify and confirm basic faults within the system.*
- Test parameters, standard requirements and common solutions.*
- Different types of hardware, software, apps and or firmware.
- IT security vulnerabilities.*
Technical skills
- Comply with health and safety and security requirements.*
- Use of infrastructure, networks, software, packages or programmes.*
- Apply knowledge to resolve issues and support users knowing when and who to escalate to.*
- Test performance and usability.*
- Apply sustainability practices in their role.
- Maintain documentation and systems following organisational process and procedures.*
- Use digital technologies to support daily work activities.*
- Safe and ethical use of emerging technologies.
- Install equipment and components.*
- Carry out routine maintenance and repair common faults.*
- Remove hardware following organisations processes.*
- Install software, apps or firmware to user requirements.*
