Information about Health and social care foundation apprenticeship (level 2)
Health and care support assistants work in a range of health and care settings, for example in a care home, hospital, General Practice, as part of community team and in individuals’ homes where their wider team may include workers from both health and social care.
Foundation apprenticeships introduce skills for a range of jobs in a sector, and provide general skills for work. After a foundation, apprentices can specialise and do a standard level 2 or 3 apprenticeship.
Employers get an incentive payment for foundation apprenticeships, as well as government funding for training and assessment costs.

Who can do a foundation apprenticeship
At the start of the apprenticeship, they must be:- aged between 16 to 21 (or 15 if their 16th birthday is between the last Friday of June and 31 August)
- aged between 22 to 24 and
- have an education, health and care plan (EHC)
- be in care or a care leaver
- be a prisoner or a prison leaver

- Fundamental principles of a duty of care.

- Fundamental person centred values to maximise an individual’s independence.*

- Fundamental principles of infection prevention and control.*
- Developments in digital working and professional boundaries when using technology.*
- Fundamental principles of health promotion and illness prevention to support positive lifestyle choices.*
- Basic food hygiene and preparation methods.*
- Common health conditions and routine interventions and knowing when and to whom to escalate for action.
- Techniques and sources of support to help develop personal resilience when working in a health or social care setting.
- Principles of safe moving and handling of equipment and other objects and assistance of individuals.
